Tara Church
29 - New York, NY
|
Once upon a time, there was a third-grader - Tara Church - who dreamed of planting "Marcie the Marvelous Tree" while on a Girl Scout camping trip. Later, back in their hometown, the scouts decided to plant this tree after they debated the pros and cons of conserving trees versus the convenience of using disposable dishes.
Tara didn't stop with one tree. In 1987, her initial effort sprouted and grew into TREE MUSKETEERS (TM), which has tapped over one million youth volunteers to plant over a million trees. Today, TM is an environmental youth-led movement that not only plants trees, but holds regional youth summits where thousands of kids have learned about environmental issues and acquired tools to lead effective grassroots programs. Through its Partners for the Planet Network (P4P) TREE MUSKETEERS offers a vehicle for kids to function as the international youth environmental movement through: a hotline, website, speakers bureau, newsletter, resource sharing, and youth campaigns. P4P participants around the world operate under their own banners and while addressing their own hometown issues.
As a child, Tara made many speeches about the importance of saving the environment, represented youth on White House councils, and orchestrated TM's national network. But what made Tara successful was her dedication to the daily toil of planting and caring for trees, reaching out to supporters, and launching creative programs. She knew the power of planting a tree. It was her dream to unite kids everywhere in teaching other kids to become active citizens and environmental leaders.
That's why Tara is a 2007
Woman Of Worth. |
