Meagan Corlin
23 - Strafford, NH
|
At the tender age of nine, Meagan Corlin wanted to serve the community. She started a sweater drive at school, a project that continues to run annually in New England and has collected 9,250 sweaters for needy families. By age 17, she founded the StarMight Foundation to educate and empower young people to align their passions with volunteer service to create positive change in their communities. Based in New Hampshire and founded in 2002 as Meagan's senior portfolio project at her high school, the StarMight Foundation connects youth to service projects, unites young volunteers, and provides resources and support for youth created service projects. Through speaking engagements, community events, and the foundation web site, youth around the world can access the resources, training, and encouragement they need to realize their full potential as powerful change agents in their communities.
Under Meagan's leadership, the StarMight Foundation raises money for the New Hampshire Muscular Dystrophy Association and provides youth with volunteer opportunities. It has delivered over $32,000 in music gift bags, compact discs, CD players, toys and live performances to over 1,500 children's hospital patients. It also developed the first statewide NH Youth Conference on Volunteerism attended by over 100 students from 27 different schools and 80 adult and youth volunteers.
Meagan holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island where she also obtained a minor in Leadership Studies. Her experience as a presenter and contributor to national conferences include the Mothers Against Drunk Driving National Summit on Preventing Underage Drinking, the National Crime Prevention Council Youth Summit, both in Washington, D.C. She has also facilitated for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Technology in San Jose, California and the Ben and Jerry's Scoopers Making Change Conference in Waterbury, Vermont. Meagan has served as a workshop presenter and speaker for the StarMight Foundation in schools across New Hampshire, as well as with other organizations including Youth Venture, Teen Institute, 4H, City Year and the Greater Seacoast United Way. In May 2007, she was honored to present the keynote address for the United Way of Rock River Valley in Illinois.
Meagan's service has had a phenomenal impact. She has raised over $100,000 to benefit various causes and provided hundreds of youth with volunteer and community leadership opportunities. The StarMight program and movement have gone nationally, reaching millions through Meagan's media interviews, keynote speeches, and workshops.
That's why Meagan is a 2007
